1796<10C> JR-5, R.5. VF30 NGC. The obverse exhibits intermingled gold and lilac-gray with a splash of charcoal gray on Liberty's shoulder. On the reverse there is a cut that crosses the base of the eagle's neck, and this is somewhat distracting. Examination will also find a shallow depression on the coin (possibly on the planchet before striking) from the F in OF through the branch, right wing and ending on the cloud below the right claw of the eagle. The reverse has medium gray at the center, with some raised verdigris around the eagle. JR-5 is doubly important because it ranks as the scarcest 1796 variety (aside from a very low grade and possibly unique die pairing discovered recently) within a date which is celebrated as one of the most desirable issues within the U.S. dime series. A later die state with the bisecting die crack from Liberty's bust up her neck and face to the rim through the R. The authors of the John Reich dime book proclaim that the variety comprises "less than 5% of all 1796 dimes." and this coin is probably within the top dozen known of this scarce die pairing.
Ex: Bill Subjack (July 1984). Envelope Included.
