1796<10C> MS62 NGC. JR-6, R.3. This is the so-called "hyphenated date" because of the die crack that runs through the date. Approximately 30% of extant 1796 dimes are believed to be from variety, with most coins clustered around the VF grade level. Perhaps half a dozen examples of this die marriage survive in Mint State grades. As we have said in the past, but it bears repeating again, the JR reference gives an unreliable diagnostic for attributing this variety: there actually is a very small outer berry between D and S1. This is a late die state with most of the die cracks listed in the JR reference seen on the obverse and reverse. The surfaces are originally toned in medium to darker gray shades with blue and rose accents. The luster is somewhat subdued by the depth of the toning, but there are no singularly mentionable marks or other abrasions. Worth a close look and a premium bid.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (1/03), lot 198.
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
