1796<10C> AU58 PCGS. JR-4, R.4. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle dimes were coined in limited quantities during 1796 and 1797. All of these pieces were delivered between January 18, 1796 and August 28, 1797, with a total production of 47,396 coins. These were produced in two widely separated groups. From January 18 through May 27, 1796, a total of 22,135 dimes were coined, certainly all dated 1796. From February 28 to August 28, 1797, a total of 25,261 dimes were minted, probably all dated 1797. Unlike many other denominations during this period, it is believed that the annual totals for these first dimes actually represent the production bearing each date on the coins. This example is sharply struck with exceptional eye appeal. A trace of wear is visible on the eagle's breast, but nowhere else on either side. The surfaces have satiny luster beneath lilac, blue, and iridescent toning.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
