1796 10C AU58 NGC. JR-6, R.3. Many diagnostics have been noted for the identification of this variety, although in practice a quick glance at the date will confirm the attribution. This is sometimes called the "hyphenated date" as all examples have a die crack through the digits 179 of the date. On later die states, this die crack becomes quite heavy. In Early United States Dimes, the reverse is described as lacking an outer berry between the letters D and S in UNITED STATES. Examination of this coin reveals a tiny berry, about half the size of the others, in this location. Though typically weak at the centers, this is an attractive example with nearly full luster and delicate heather toning, accented by steel-blue patina. Both sides are lightly scratched as often is the case with these 200 year old silver coins. Lot:6173
