1796<$10> AU58 NGC. B. 1-A, Breen-6832, Taraszka-6, R.4. Among Small Eagle ten-dollar gold coins, there are three dates known, 1795, 1796, and 1797. Only 1795 is considered a common date, 1796 is rare, and 1797 is extremely rare. Possibly as many as 500 1795-dated eagles exist today, along with about 150 dated 1796, and about 50 dated 1797. Only this one die variety was produced during the year, along with a single die variety for the Small Eagle ten of 1797. In addition, five varieties were struck in 1795, bringing the total to seven die marriages for the first design. The first delivery of gold eagles was dated September 22, 1795, consisting of 1,097 of these coins, the largest gold coins being produced by the Mint at that time. The mintage by variety, or even by date, is not known, and it is probably not possible to make such a determination.
This is a remarkable near-Mint example with brilliant yellow-gold surfaces, prooflike fields, and scattered surface marks. Both sides have faint greenish tendencies, and the reverse has splashes of pale lilac color. A few scattered surface marks and faint hairlines are evident, but are of little consequence. This example represents the usual die state for 1796 eagles, with an obverse die crack from the field below E, down through the cap, hair, and bust, ending at the lower bust line. Faint clash marks are evident above the date.
From The Chief Paduke Collection.
