1796<$10> AU55 PCGS. Breen-6832, B. 1-A, Taraszka-6, R.4. Only a single die pairing was used this year. Although its mintage of 4,146 pieces is similar to that of the 1795, the 1796 Eagle is a considerably more difficult coin to locate in all grades. Presumably, fewer examples were retained as luxury souvenirs at the time of issue. This issue has the added desirability among modern collectors as being the only Early Eagle with 8 stars left and 8 right. Faint clash marks are encountered below the bust and between the upper leaves of the olive wreath. Although the eagle's neck offers faint rub, this well struck Borderline Uncirculated representative has a bold strike and is without adjustment marks. The surfaces are surprisingly free from most relevant abrasions. A curving pinscratch in the lower right obverse field is mentioned primarily as a pedigree marker.
