1796<$10> AU55 PCGS. B. 1-A, Taraszka-6, the only known dies, R.4. The Philadelphia Mint produced 6,934 eagles in calendar year 1796. Those coins were struck from January through March, however, were dated 1795 with the result that the total mintage for the 1796 eagle is only 4,146 pieces. This total is not significantly lower than that of the 1795 (5,583 pieces), but the 1796 is at least twice as rare at all levels of preservation. The reason for this simple: the first-year 1795 was saved in significant numbers as a novelty, whereas the second-year 1796 circulated as extensively as possible for an early U.S. gold coin of this denomination. Advanced type collectors and gold specialists alike would be wise to take full advantage of the bidding opportunity that this lot represents. Probably a middle die state, the obverse of this coin displays a meandering crack from the field below the E in LIBERTY to the bottom of Liberty's bust. The crack is most extensive over and above the top of the portrait. The otherwise green-gold color lightens to honey-gold shades at direct angles, and both sides retain appreciably sharp definition in most areas. Some prooflike characteristics remain in the most protected areas and add brightness to the surfaces. Lightly worn with scattered abrasions that are mostly small in size. Population: 17 in 55, 22 finer (7/06).
