1796<$10> AU55 Cleaned, Reverse Field Smoothed Uncertified. Breen-6832, B. 1-A, Taraszka-6, R.4. Only 4,146 pieces were struck of the 1796 ten, after the five deliveries of 1795-dated coins were netted out of the year's mintage. Apparently, the novelty of the new ten dollar coin had subsided significantly by 1796, enough to ensure that most examples of the 1796 entered circulation and stayed there. This date is much scarcer than the 1795 and was not saved in any appreciable numbers as the 1795 tens were. In fact, only 35-50 coins are believed extant today in all grades. This coin certainly has its share of problems, including obvious cleaning and less-obvious smoothing of the upper left reverse field. However, the design elements show very little evidence of actual handling in the channels of commerce. Liberty's hair curls and the center of the eagle's breast are weakly defined, but there are no obvious or mentionable abrasions on either side. A light speckling of reddish patina, possibly an iodine stain, is seen to the left of the wreath on the reverse.
