1796 $10 AU50 PCGS. Breen-6832, Taraszka-6, BD-1, R.4. The only known die pair. The eagles are the best documented denomination of early gold coinage. Anthony Taraszka correctly detailed the 33 known varieties produced from 1795 until 1804 before publication of John Dannreuther's study. These varieties include the 1804 restrike that was coined in the 1830s. Two known design types include a Small Eagle and a Heraldic Eagle. Seven die combinations of the first design are known, dated 1795, 1796, and 1797.
Nearly 300 examples of 1795 BD-1 exist, and half as many 1796 eagles are known. All remaining varieties of this first type are considerably rarer. Early Mint records report the number struck each year, but do little to determine the actual production of each date. The Mint produced 5,583 eagles in 1795 and 4,146 in 1796, with five known varieties of the former year and just one of the latter. Survival rates for the early gold approximate 10%. The estimated population of 150 coins dated 1796 indicates that about 1,500 pieces were actually coined with that date.
Attractive greenish-gold surfaces are enhanced by peripheral rose and lilac toning with considerable luster. Central weakness on each side is the rule for this date, with minor surface roughness on the obverse of this piece. Light hairlines and other handling marks are noted on both sides. Full border details indicate excellent centering. A vertical crack begins in the field below E of LIBERTY, crossing the bust to the bottom drapery line above the 9.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
