1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters AU53 NGC. B-4, BB-61, R.3. Die State I. Very slight die lapping is evident on the obverse, in the form of weakened curls at the top of the head and in front of the forehead. The NGC holder is mislabeled "BB-64, B-6," which is really a shame because it would be finest of four known if the attribution was correct. As it is, this lovely early dollar is a remarkable example with gorgeous lilac-gray color. accented by splashes of olive on the highpoints. Dave Bowers estimates that as many as 2,000 examples could exist, although the actual total is believed by most specialists to be in the range of 300 to 400 coins. Only two or three dozen of those are as nice as this piece.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
