1796 1/2 C No Pole VG Details Corroded NCS. B-1a,
1796<1/2 C> No Pole VG Details Corroded NCS. B-1a, C-1, R.6. The insert only states DETAILS but does not specify the details of what grade. We have taken the liberty to fill in the missing grade as VG 8.
The 1796 half cents are legendary rarities among copper specialists. Both With and No Pole variants are rare, but there are fewer No Pole coins known. Breen estimated in 1983 that around 20 No Pole coins were known at that time. He listed the pedigrees of 12 coins and said at least 10 others have been reported in lower grades. Curiously, though, only five pieces have been certified to date (3/05) by NGC and PCGS from Good 4 through MS62. Many of the No Pole survivors display heavy wear and/or porosity, as seen here. All known examples were struck on rolled copper planchets, although Cohen claims to have examined specimens that had been struck on cut down large cents. When Breen wrote his half cent reference he designated the rolled copper planchet pieces as B.1a and left the B.1b designation open in the event that examples struck on cut down large cents surface at a future date. This particular coin is heavily corroded with pronounced granularity on each side. Deep brown patina throughout. While heavily worn and corroded, this piece will, nevertheless, be a welcome addition to an advanced collection of early copper coins.
