1795 S$1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves--Reverse Scratched--
1795 S$1 Flowing Hair, Two Leaves--Reverse Scratched--NCS. Fine Details. B-16, BB-23, R.8. Digit 7 punched over 1 ("1795/1195"); double tail berry, berry below left base of N. Die State I, perfect dies as always. Reiver Die State a. Apparently just three examples of this die marriage are known, including one nearly Mint State example and another with a hole. This particular coin has light golden-gray color and appealing surfaces, although we note some minor rim nicks below the 17 of date and between stars 13 and 14 on the obverse, similarly on the reverse above OF and ER of AMERICA. Close examination of the obverse will note a few faint hairlines. On the reverse, there is an "X" scratched which extends from the upper left inside leaf through the head of the eagle, right wing, to the upper inside pair of leaves below that wing. The crossing line of the "X" is fainter and extends only from the center of the eagle's chest along the ridge of the wing to the center of the right wing. This scratch is evident under magnification, but not as distracting as if it had been etched on the obverse. No evidence of double striking on this coin, as seen on the most recent discovery of this die pairing which is double-struck on the obverse and reverse, but is also damaged by a hole. The discovery coin and finest known of this variety is the Ostheimer coin, which is an attractive AU50 or higher example. That coin was sold by Superior Stamp and Coin three times over a few years (October 4, 1973, lot 1218; August 1975, lot 811; and February 1977, lot 468), and it remains in an advanced collection since the time of the 1977 sale. The present offering is an extraordinary opportunity for the specialist to obtain one of the most difficult die pairings of the entire series. This specimen is the plate coin for Reiver's The United States Early Silver Dollars 1794-1803 and the Bowers-Borckardt Silver Dollar Encyclopedia.
Ex: Early 1980s coin show, unattributed; H.
