1795<S$1> Flowing Hair, Three Leaves XF45 NGC. B-5, BB-27, R.1. Dark brown and gray with traces of luster in the protected areas. The strike is typically weak on Liberty's curls, but most of the breast feathers show on the eagle. This coin is identifiable by a minor edge flaw near the second star. It is assumed by modern numismatists that at least two engravers were hard at work on the early Flowing Hair silver dollar dies. One engraver seemed to favor a pointed bust tip to Liberty coupled with a leafy wreath on the reverse, with full, wide leaves and quickly identifiable by the three leaf clusters which reside just under the eagle's wings. Apparently a different engraver favored a more rounded bust tip on Liberty, and much thinner and delicate definition on the wreath, on these dies there are two leaves under each of the eagle's wings. Based on the number of dies known, apparently the two leaf version was the most accepted, as these represent the largest number of dies. Nevertheless, the luck of the draw was also with the three leaf proponent as the die steel used on those dies held up especially well, and this variety is one of the most common of all early silver coinage, and represents at least one half of the entire mintage of 1795 silver dollars. No adjustment marks or significant problems to report, and this would make a decent type coin for the collector.
