1795 S$1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves MS64 NGC. B-5, BB-27, R.1. Die State III. Although this is undoubtedly the most common 1795 silver dollar variety, and actually one of the most common varieties in the entire series of early dollars from 1794 to 1803, it is almost never encountered in such a fine state of preservation. In fact, it is our opinion that this piece is one of the top three or four examples of this die variety known to exist.
It is a pleasure for this cataloger, who wrote the Eliasberg description, to revisit this piece after 10 years, writing a decade ago: "Notwithstanding whatever numerical grade is assigned--and certainly a liberal Mint State number is in order--the coin ranks extremely high on the scale for aesthetic appeal. The surfaces are a delightful mixture of light lilac and gold, another Eliasberg coin that is absolutely incredible in its beauty. The striking is above average, with good detail (considering the variety) at the centers, even at the high part of the eagle's body, although not with full feather definition. The dentils frame the coin nicely, as is the case with a number of varieties of this year. The rim is somewhat flat on the dentils opposite stars 5-8." Although assigned a higher grade today, as it was only called MS62 in the Eliasberg catalog, this coin has not changed over the last 10 years, in an era when so many coins are enhanced or conserved. It appears exactly the same today as it did in 1997. The surfaces have satiny luster and the fields are essentially unimpaired. The coloration gives a distinctive look that is only found on coins from old time collections.
Ex: E.W. Ropes Collection (New York Coin & Stamp Co., 2/1899); J.M. Clapp; John H.
