1795<S$1> Flowing Hair, Three Leaves AU50 PCGS. B-7, BB-18, R.3. A simply beautiful example of this Flowing Hair silver dollar which boasts a sharp strike and glorious deep blue peripheral toning with the balance of the coin a desirable light silver-gray. No adjustment marks or nicks distract the eye, and even the rims are clean. One of the most popular varieties with collectors as Liberty's hair is usually well struck and artfully rendered by the engraver. Furthermore, many of the eagle's breast feathers are present and all the wing feathers show the finer definition lacking on most other die pairings. The present die variety is has always drawn well deserved attention for its natural beauty and exceptional quality, qualities which are quite apparent in the present coin. If one must find fault, there are some moderate hairlines on the obverse and the coin is identifiable by a complex broken scratch which extends from the middle of the right wing and crosses several leaves in the wreath and continues into the field just left of the first A in AMERICA.
Known as the "head of 1794" the obverse device of Liberty most closely resembles that used on the 1794 die. While not a rare variety, the B-7, BB-18 is encountered much less often than the B-1, BB-21 and B-5, BB-27 die pairings. Housed in an older green insert PCGS holder where it has apparently remained since being sold in early 1996.
Ex: Bowers and Merena's Brooks Sale (June 1989), lot 157; Bowers and Merena's Set Shahbabian Sale (January 1996) cover coin for that sale, lot 1567.
