The Draped Bust motif on the obverse, also used for other silver and copper denominations beginning in 1796, is said to be the creation of famous portrait artist Gilbert Stuart. It is also stated that the model for Miss Liberty was the beautiful socialite, Mrs. William Bingham. Medium gray and light gray patina graces this nicely detailed example. A few faint hairlines are seen on both sides, but overall, the surfaces are refreshingly unabraded. There are only two 1795 Draped Bust varieties, and both merit separate Guide Book listings. The Off Center Bust earns its name because it is offset to the left and appears to lean backwards. While the obverse die makes its only appearance on Bolender-14, the hardy reverse die returned for five additional die marriages that are dated between 1796 and 1798.
From The Long Beach Family Collection.
