1795<S$1> Draped Bust, Off Center XF45 PCGS. B-14, BB-51, R.2. A very attractive coin for the grade with light silvery-gray accented by peripheral russet on the obverse and reverse. With this new design which incorporated the Draped Bust of Liberty combined with the small eagle reverse, it is believed that this was the first die pairing engraved. Note how the head of Liberty is crowded off to the left of the obverse, with only a small field below her ribbon, while the right side of the obverse has a large, open expanse. Clearly the head of Liberty looks misplaced on this variety. One other 1795 variety was coined in which the head of Liberty is centered on the coin, and Liberty kept her centering for the duration of the use of this design. No adjustment marks are seen, and the surfaces attractive for the grade, with a few minor surface lines in the fields, but not unexpected for such a large, circulated coin.
From The Thomas Wolfe Collection, Part One.
