1795 S$1 Draped Bust, Off Center MS61 NGC. B-14, BB-51, R.2. The Draped Bust design dominated silver designs between 1796 and 1806, but its first appearance was on two die marriages of the 1795 dollar. These are readily distinguished by the placement of the obverse bust, which is too far left on Boldender-14, and is well centered on Bolender-15. Both varieties are separately listed in the Guide Book. But which variety was struck first? Since the bust placement is blundered only on B-14, it has been assumed to be the first Draped Bust variety. The reverse die also has an error of sorts, it was lightly hubbed, most noticeably on the two leaves just left of the eagle. However, the reverse die for B-14 was used again, while B-15 had no re-use of dies. This fact suggests that B-14 was struck after B-15, otherwise B-15 would presumably have used the reverse of B-14. Instead, the B-14 reverse later produced an additional five Bolender varieties: 1796 B-1, B-2, and B-3; 1797 B-2; and 1798 B-2. Thus, the remarkably hardy 1795 B-14 reverse die struck each of the four dates of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle type.
The present impressive piece displays cartwheel luster, an uncommon event for any early silver dollar. The centers display light chestnut toning, while the fields and borders are cream-gray. Most of the breast feathers are sharp, and Liberty's hair detail is virtually full. The fields display light clash marks, in contradiction to Q. David Bower's 1993 Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States, which states that perfect dies are "the only state known." Jules Reiver also failed to note this additional, later die state. Thorough evaluation locates a couple of minor marks on the reverse field, near the eagle and beneath the ribbon ends. These are in every case consistent with the MS61 grade. This lot presents a remarkable opportunity to the advanced Guide Book collector or die variety specialist.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
