Many prooflike examples of this variety are known, leading Q. David Bowers to suggest that this variety was the first struck of the 1795 Draped Bust coins. While this is not known for certain, it seems logical that B-14 was coined prior to B-15, based on this and other evidence. An alternative viewpoint is that this variety was struck later, based on the continuing use of the reverse die through 1798.
Several Mint State or nearly Mint State examples of this variety are known, including the present example. The impression is well-centered with full obverse and reverse borders. The surfaces are exceptional with few blemishes of any type. Both sides retain nearly full luster with reflective, prooflike fields beneath lovely gold and medium gray color. Although the Bowers-Borckardt reference suggests that only perfect die examples are known, this specimen has faint clash marks on the reverse.
From The Royal Oak Collection.
