1795 Half Dollar, NGC AU58
O-103, R.5. For the specific variety, the NGC Census Report documents a mere two O-103 Flowing Hair halves at the AU58 level with none finer. The same itemization indicates that the next finest example grades VF. However, it is possible that one or two O-103 halves are included in NGC's catchall bracket for 1795 halves, including one or two in AU58. Researcher Andrew Pollock's provisional Condition Census of early halves (1794-1797) documents 30 auction appearances of 1795 O-103, with six of the top ten pieces listed as VF. The best four examples include three coins at the EF level, with only one AU piece, although we note that many of the coins in Pollock's research appeared at auction before the advent of third party grading. For more recent data, we turn to Stephen Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars, which shows five appearances of AU58 O-103 halves with three of the coins realizing between $23,000 and $25,300. Closer examination reveals that the five auction showings of AU58 O-103 halves includes multiple events of the same two coins, which correlates to the NGC population data. The example offered here displays bold detail and an attractive, natural gunmetal-grey patination. A few light adjustment marks--as made--are noted on the obverse. A important upper Condition Census specimen for the variety. O-103 is unknown in Mint State condition.
