This variety overall is one of the three most "common" of the year with an estimated 75 survivors believed known today in all grades. However, it is difficult to locate in Mint State, according to Logan and McCloskey. That being said, there are two very high grade examples known of the V-6, the Eliasberg:892 coin, and the current piece. This is an earlier die state than the Eliasberg coin as that piece had die clash marks in the fields and this one does not. The die cracks mentioned in the LM reference are present, and are really quite spectacular when examined with a magnifier, with a secondary crack branching out from the primary one just below Liberty's eye. Many Uncirculated 1795 half dimes were in the Wadsworth-Rea hoard, which was a group of coins that was dispersed by dealer William Woodward in the early 1880s. However, this variety was not one of the three contained in that hoard, making its condition all the more unusual and significant for collectors.<BR>The first thing one notices about this coin is the spectacular toning on each side. Thalo blue centers are surrounded by golden-rose toning at the margins with thick mint frost that gives the coin a brightness and luminosity that is unparalleled among other Uncirculated 1795 half dimes we have seen. Close examination with a magnifier shows no obvious post-striking impairments on either side. However, there are numerous shallow adjustment marks in the center of the obverse and two deeper ones by Liberty's hairline. These are not especially distracting, and with the intensity of toning and luster present on this piece, are not readily apparent to the unaided eye. This coin was also graded MS67 * by NGC. Simply outstanding quality, this coin is destined for a finest known type set. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed>No Prior Data Recorded </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
