The lustrous fields are light silver-gray, toned with darker gold and lilac through the stars and on the reverse in the fields, but the devices are bright. The strike is decent for the issue, with slight weakness on the upper curls of Liberty and the eagle's breast. Heavy adjustment marks cross over Liberty's face and hair, disturbing several important design elements. Nevertheless, adjustment marks were part of the minting process, and a substantial number of silver and gold coins from this era show evidence of being adjusted with a metal file prior to being struck. Often the adjustment marks were obliterated (or nearly so) by striking, but not so on this coin. Given the limitations of the somewhat primitive early Philadelphia Mint, rolling out silver ingots into precisely the correct thickness for planchets must have been a nightmare. It was far easier to make the planchets slightly thick, then adjust them down to the proper weight with a file, rather than having a planchet that was too thin and thus had to be melted and taken through the entire rolling process again. This half dime bears witness to the step-saving economies of the day. This is the usual die state, with the obverse die crack down from the rim through the Y of LIBERTY to Liberty's nose.
