1795 50C Small Head VF35 PCGS. O-126a, High R.4. The reverse has a fine die crack from the border through the left stem and ribbon to the lowest leaf pair at U, following the stem to the E of UNITED and the border, similar to O-110, but there are no visible clash marks as found on O-110.
The surfaces have deep grayish-gold color with darker steel at the peripheries. Splashes of pale blue and iridescent toning are evident on both sides.
Three obverse dies are designated as "Small Head" dies, and they are quickly recognized by a thin shoulder loop or truncation line directly below the shoulder adjacent to its juncture with the lower hair detail. Robert Hilt attributed these dies to John Smith Gardner, who assisted Robert Scot in the engraving department. The Small Head varieties are O-126, 127, and 128, and they deserve a separate listing in the Guide Book.
Haseltine-15; Beistle 15-Ga; Overton-56; Hilt 24-Z; PCGS# 6054; Encyclopedia-4564.
Ex: Michael Summers (5/2005).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
