1795 50C Small Head Fine 12 PCGS. O-127a, High R.6. Like other examples from Overton's reverse H, this piece exhibits a fine die crack from the lower border that curves into the wreath to the E of UNITED. There is no evidence of the small crack over OF, but this may be due to wear. The obverse die is shattered with a crack from the border to right tip of the 5 and the bust and another the border through star 7 to the back of Liberty's head. Most spectacular are parallel die cracks through Y and star 9, both to Liberty's nose, with the area between these cracks raised to form a retained cud. The interesting conclusion one comes to when studying this coin is that the workhorse reverse die (four die pairings) outlasted the single-use obverse die.
An outstanding example with deep gray surfaces and deeper steel toning near the borders. Aside from a few tiny rim nicks, this piece is essentially flawless.
Haseltine-19; Beistle 19a-Gb; Overton-59; Hilt 25-Z; PCGS# 6054; Encyclopedia-4564.
Ex: Michael Summers (5/2005).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
