1795 50C 3 Leaves XF40 NGC. O-111, High R.4. The date
1795<50C> 3 Leaves XF40 NGC. O-111, High R.4. The date is dramatically recut on this variety, with the first date entered much lower into the die than the second. But this Overton variety is even more famous for having three leaves under each wing of the eagle, in comparison to all other 1795 reverse dies which have only two leaves under each wing. This pleasing specimen has light silver-gray centers with slightly darker borders. On this example, there is a small die crack from the leftmost member of the left three-leaved cluster up to the vertex of the eagle's wing. A heavy die break from the center of the eagle's breast to the rim at the first S in STATES, found on all examples, is especially so on this piece, so that two different planes exist: The top of the left wing and the eagle's upper half are worn much more than the bottom. STA and CA on the reverse are soft at their tops, the apparent result of die misalignment. Despite 20 points of wear, muted luster clings to the pristine and unimpaired surfaces of this popular Guide Book variety.
