1795<50C> 2 Leaves. O-122, R.5. XF45 NGC. The heavy retained cud from 3 to 5 o'clock on the reverse is apparently always present on the scarce Overton-122 marriage. This same reverse was used for at least four different varieties (five if an example of O-118 actually exists). Bold clashmarks surround Liberty, and are particularly prominent along her neck. Original medium golden-brown and gunmetal-gray colors grace this impressively detailed Flowing Hair Half Dollar. A few brief and light adjustment marks, as struck, are noted near the L in LIBERTY and the ninth star. Traces of mint luster shimmer from protected areas. Mint-made obverse planchet flaws at 3 and 4:30 add further interest. A delicate pinscratch beneath Liberty's nose is barely worthy of mention. Numerically equivalent to the finest auctioned over the past several years. The Queller coin, auctioned by Stack's in 2002, was similarly graded as XF45, although that coin clearly exceeds this for overall quality. Although this variety is given an R.5 rating, which is relatively common among 1795 half dollars, few have appeared for auction sale over the past decade.
Ex: J.J.
