1795 50C 2 Leaves XF40 NGC
1795 50C 2 Leaves XF40 NGC. O-103a, R.5. This important late die state has a massive rim break on the reverse, joining the tops of AM to the border over E, spanning 10 mm of the border. Curiously, this collectible die state was missing from the Jules Reiver Collection that was formed over decades and encompassed both varieties and die states. Unlike the coin photographed in the Overton reference, this coin is not weak on stars 10, 11, 12, and 13. Listed at the top of the recorded examples on Stephen Herrman's auction survey for this variety. This piece is tied with one other XF40 as finest in his listing and it is almost certainly the finest known of the late die state coins.
An attractive coin, the surfaces are lilac and rose-gray on each side with more of a mottled effect on the reverse. Identifiable as the DeVries coin by a dark russet spot on the obverse rim at 5 o'clock, and by the distinctive toning pattern on the reverse. Only the slightest remnants of mint luster still show around the devices. The only mark of note, and a further pedigree identifier, is small and located next to the eagle's left (facing) leg.
Haseltine-20; Beistle 1b-Ba; Overton-18; Hilt 20-O; PCGS# 6052; Encyclopedia-4560.
Ex: DeVries Collection (Stack's, 9/1996), lot 1224; Gerald Shertz; Sheridan Downey (11/1997).
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
