1795 50C 2 Leaves VF30 PCGS. O-103a, R.5. The lowest c
1795<50C> 2 Leaves VF30 PCGS. O-103a, R.5. The lowest curl is about equidistant from four star points. There is a small die crack from the end of the bust to the milling left of star 15. Another runs from the rim at 12 o'clock down through the E in LIBERTY, and faintly to the top of Liberty's head. A third crack runs faintly from the lower edge, between the 1 and the 7, diagonally northwest through the 1 in the date and the lower curls. Two small cracks join below the left (facing) wingtip and run to the rim. This interesting coin shows the massive retained cud above the AME of the O-103a. But the example pictured in the Overton-Parsley fourth (and third) edition shows stars 10 through 13 "blanked out," which the authors attribute to the lack of pressure from the heavy reverse die break. This example, however, shows softness through the Y and stars 9 and 10, which are not opposite the retained cud die break. If the obverse die had rotated and Overton's cause-effect was correct, the softness on this example would be seen through stars 12 through 15, which are opposite the break (because of die rotation) on this example. It seems equally likely that the softness is due to simple die misalignment (see a specimen of the 1795 O-103 previous).
This attractive specimen is smoke-gray, with silver-gray highpoints. Some slight planchet roughness runs through the date, and there are slight adjustment marks along the reverse rim at 4 and 9 o'clock--including through the area opposite the obverse softness, where ICA are quite faint. A fascinating coin for the die state specialists.
