1795 50C 2 Leaves VF25 NGC. O-106, R.6. This use of Obverse 1 represents a later die state than when it was used for O-101, O-102, and O-103. The die crack from the end of the bust to the milling, just left of star 15, is more pronounced, as are other obverse die cracks. The reverse is easily recognized by a diagnostic bisecting die crack from the edge at I of AMERICA, through the right (facing) wing, the eagle's neck, and through the A in STATES to the edge. The portion of the reverse northwest of the crack is on a slightly higher plane, suggesting that part of the die had sunk slightly. As a result, the coin was not quite as sharply struck in that area, and also was subject to more pronounced effects of circulation.
A combination of bluish-gray, pink-rose, and golden-brown patination is seen over each side. Well centered, with nicely detailed motifs that are consistent with the grade. A few minute marks scattered over each side do not distract. This is certainly a Condition Census example, and probably ranks as third or fourth finest known.
Haseltine-25; Beistle 1b-D; Overton-14; Hilt 20-T; PCGS# 6052; Encyclopedia-4560.
Ex: Julian Leidman; David Davis (7/1979); Jules Reiver (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 22485.
