1795<50C> 2 Leaves. O-114, R.6. VF25 NGC. Die break below bust tip. No outside berry between D and S, the only such die found among all 1795 half dollars. Without a single exception, every other known reverse die used in the 1795 Half Dollar coinage has a berry in that position. This rare variety shares the obverse die from Overton-113, but is an earlier die state with a smaller die break beneath the bust tip.
Among the very finest examples of this variety known. Far finer than the plate coin in the third edition of Overton, and also clearly finer than any example auctioned over the past 15 years. According to Steve Herrman's list, only five examples have been offered for auction sale since 1992, and the finest of those was just VG10. This example is a bit optimistically graded, and yet it is still one of the three or four finest known. Battleship-gray devices are lighter in color than the deep blue-green and plum fields. Trivial marks are detected on both sides.
Ex: Julian Leidman; David Davis (7/31/1979). Possibly earlier from Don Frederick. Envelope Included.
