1795<50C> 2 Leaves MS61 NGC. O-116, R.5. One of the finer examples of this variety and certainly in the Condition Census of the top six known. Currently there are two slightly finer coins graded, one each as MS62 by NGC and PCGS (these are different specimens), followed by the current coin and two others that have been graded as AU58 just below. This particular coin is toned a dark gray with slightly lighter gray colors near the center. The obverse has adjustment marks on the rim and through Liberty's head, many of which are hidden by her hair. One adjustment mark in particular slides by just above her eye. On the reverse there are a couple of light adjustment marks through the right wing to the eagle's breast, fading away in the fields surrounding. The strike is typical for this variety, with softness on Liberty's upper curls and the eagle's breast and feet. Boldly clashed dies with the obverse showing UNITED clashed along the upper rim and portions of the eagle's wing. Both dies show dentils clashed heavily at the periphery. The obverse die has a broken die crack along the dentils near the first five stars, and another at the tops of RTY and the next two stars. The reverse die was in excellent shape when this coin came between it, although we note a trace of die rust under the right wing of the eagle. A coin that will probably go to a type collection as few variety collectors have the means to purchase coins at this lofty grade level.
