Based on information from other researchers, however, we believe the true Census includes several higher grade pieces. Although this example is almost certainly within the top half dozen known examples, we are unable to claim that it is the second finest known.
This is a delightful example, not only for its high quality and aesthetic appeal, but for its die state. It is a sharply struck example with a nicely centered impression. The surfaces have nearly full and brilliant luster with faint champagne color and peripheral iridescent toning. Both sides have faint hairlines and minor abrasions, along with a trace of wear that prevents a Mint State grade assessment. Although there is no evidence of the die cracks that appear for the O-110a die state, there are prominent clash marks in the obverse and reverse fields. This is an intermediate die state between O-110 and O-110a.
From The Royal Oak Collection.
