The devices are well struck, and Liberty boasts strong definition on her cascading curls. The surfaces show minimal nicks or scratches as expected, but we do note rather moderate adjustment marks on the reverse. These adjustment marks reside along the rim and also on the eagle at the center, but are not that distracting to the unaided eye. Certainly in the Condition Census for the variety, and a very difficult type coin to find so well preserved in such a lofty grade.
The 1794 and 1795 Flowing Hair half dollars were struck in very limited quantities. Apparently the designs were not well received by the public, and by late 1795 changes were authorized. A new style was first produced on the Draped Bust, Small Eagle silver dollar, which met with approval, and this design was adapted for the half dollar starting in 1796. Thus, a short-lived type coin was created by this change in design. Today, the Flowing Hair half dollar is highly popular and desirable, with Liberty herself capturing the free spirit pervasive during those early days of our democracy.
From The Thomas Wolfe Collection, Part One.
