1795<$5> Small Eagle XF Details, Improperly Cleaned, NCS. Breen-2C, Breen-6412, Bass-3035, Miller-4, R.5. This variety is generally recognize by extensive die rust at the lower obverse, especially in the lower hair curls and drapery. Similarly, a small patch of die rust at the right top of F in OF identifies the reverse. The surfaces on both sides have a slightly glossy or reflective appearance from cleaning. Light yellow-gold tends toward green with splashes of attractive rose toning. The surfaces have very light hairlines as well as minor abrasions; however, this is much nicer than the description suggests. The gold half eagle was our nation's first gold coin, and some consider this variety to be the first of 12 varieties produced with the 1795 date. Mint records suggest that 8,707 examples were produced, that being the total number of half eagles struck in 1795. It is most likely the case that some of the 6,196 coin 1796 mintage were dated 1795. We believe the actual mintage is in the neighborhood of 13,000 coins.
From the Dr. Kurt Peters Collection. From the Dr. Kurt Peters Collection.
