1795 $5 Small Eagle--Reverse Repaired--NCS. Unc Details. B. 2-C, Breen-6412, Bass-3035, BD-1, R.5. Both Harry Bass and John Dannreuther agreed that this variety was probably the first 1795 half eagle struck, a conclusion also reached by this cataloger during study of the early gold coinage, based on extensive study of die states. The only other possibility is that the first S/D variety, BD-5, might have been the first half eagle variety, but other stylistic characteristics suggest that the S/D coins were struck later.
This piece is essentially Mint State with bright yellow-gold color, traces of rose toning, and fully prooflike fields. Minor tooling lines at the bottom of the reverse suggest that some defect was repaired, but otherwise, the surfaces on both sides are highly pleasing.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
