1795<$5> Small Eagle MS62 PCGS. Breen-6412, B. 2-C, Miller-4, R.5. A less common variety that has several distinguishing characteristics, among which are the 5 in the date overlapping the bust of Liberty, pronounced recutting of the T in LIBERTY, and die spurs down from the denticles on the upper reverse. This is an advanced die state as well with evidence of die rust on the lower obverse.
There are two major varieties of the 1795 Capped Bust Right Five Dollar: Small Eagle and Heraldic Eagle. Whereas the latter is a backdated issue, the former was actually delivered in 1795 as the premier gold coin in U.S. history. The 1795 Small Eagle is actually one of the more plentiful Bust Right Fives in today's market, a fact that indicates widespread preservation at the time of delivery. This is not to suggest that this issue is easy to obtain. On the contrary, first-year type collectors will have to face considerable bidder competition for the honor of owning a high grade representative.
This is a bright, yellow-golden representative with a prooflike glint in the fields as the coin is viewed at different angles. A little milky patina is also visible. Both sides exhibit sharp definition, save for the barest hint of softness at the central regions. Just a few scattered marks and hairlines in the fields serve to limit the grade.
From The Frank Manthey Collection of Gold Coins.
