1795 $5 Small Eagle MS62 PCGS. Breen-6412, B. 1-B
1795<$5> Small Eagle MS62 PCGS. Breen-6412, B. 1-B, Miller-2, R.4. Twelve different 1795 Small Eagle varieties are known, but Breen 1-B is promptly attributed by short vertical die lines above TE in UNITED. Splendidly detailed, slight softness is noted on the eagle's body, but the wings and Liberty's hair and drapery are all intricate, and the star centers are distinct. A speck of light green color is noted at the tip of the left pendant of the first T in STATES, and a short, subdued pinscratch is at 5 o'clock on the obverse, beneath the bust truncation. However, the moderately reflective lemon-gold fields are relatively free from the handling marks typical of the large-sized, old tenor U.S. Half Eagles. Significant as the first U.S. gold issue, the 1795 Small Eagle $5 is also important as an early gold type, since it was struck for only three years, not including the prohibitively rare 1798 Small Eagle. Many survivors of the type were made into jewelry or otherwise abused, and original Mint State pieces are under formidable demand from advanced numismatists. Certified in an older generation, green label PCGS holder.
