1795<$5> Small Eagle--Cleaned--ANACS. AU50 Details. Breen-6414, B. 4-D, Miller-6, S over D, R.5. This is one of the more popular and visible of the many early blunders by U.S. Mint personnel from the early days of coinage: The last S in STATES is repunched over a D, clearly the product of a momentary lapse by an early worker. Many small die defects emerge from the denticles on either side, extending downward in most cases for perhaps an added half-denticle's length, although in several cases they are considerably longer. Although these die defects are generally considered to have been created when the die was being engraved--perhaps as a result of "scooping out" the denticles with a spoonlike object--their exact source is unknown. Both sides are a pretty honey-gold, and not at all unattractive despite the ANACS caveat.
From The Chief Paduke Collection.
