1795<$5> Small Eagle AU58 PCGS. Breen-6412, B. 2-C, Miller-4, R.5. This die pairing is distinguished by recutting of star 5 and T in LIBERTY on the obverse and, on the reverse, by several short die spurs extending from the denticles between S and O along with a small rust patch after the F in OF. Designed by Robert Scot, the Small Eagle type has always been a popular issue with collectors because of the design's briefness and distinctive eagle. Actually, quite a few Small Eagle Fives were saved from this year, it being our nation's first gold coin. This high grade representative is typically sharp and retains much semi-reflective luster. Appealing reddish patina mixes nicely with the green-gold alloy. There are no adjustment marks and the only disturbances worthy of mention are a couple of small marks in the right obverse field adjacent to Liberty's nose.
From The Melrose Bay Collection.
