1795 $5 Small Eagle AU58 NGC. Breen-6412, BD-3, High R.3. An ideal variety for the type collector, the BD-3 is easily the most plentiful variety of the date. Twelve 1795 Small Eagle half eagle varieties are documented with an estimated population of 500 to 600 coins in all grades. Between 175 and 225 of those represent the BD-3 dies, according to John Dannreuther. There are no other varieties with as many as half the total known today.
Coinage of half eagles began at the end of July 1795, the first federal gold coins produced by the U.S. Mint. Estimated production for all varieties of this date may have approached 12,000 coins, despite records that show a production of 8,707 coins during the second half of the year. Possibly as many as one-third of all 1795 half eagles were actually coined in 1796. Like all other denominations, the date that appears on a coin does not imply the year it was struck.
The obverse has a crack from the edge to star 12, known on intermediate and late states. This is a later state with clash marks lapped away. Highly lustrous green-gold is enhanced by splashes of pale orange toning. The fields retain considerable prooflike luster with only a trace of wear on the highpoints of the design. The obverse and reverse surfaces are remarkably well preserved with minimal abrasions. Census: 58 in 58, 59 finer (7/07), including all 12 die varieties.
Accompanied by an old envelope that shows it was purchased as Uncirculated for $200.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
