1795<$5> Small Eagle AU58 NGC. Breen-6414, B. 4-D, Miller-6, S over D, R.5. The S over D is a classic mint blunder. The absent-minded engraver momentarily confused the TES in STATES with the TED in UNITED. A half-hearted attempt was made to efface the D, or perhaps it simply was not as deeply entered into the die, which suggests that each letter in the legends may have taken more than one blow from hammer to punch to engrave into the die. Of course, any 1795 Half Eagle variety is desirable, not only due to rarity, but because of their historical significance as the first gold issue produced by the United States Mint.
This impressive piece features a wide band of rather prooflike luster throughout the margins. Luster also dominates the eagle's wing and Liberty's hair tresses. Although generally canary-gold in color, hints of ruby toning are found on occasion on the border of each side. Thorough evaluation fails to locate any remotely mentionable marks. A whisper of friction is noted on the eagle's legs and on the folds of Liberty's cap. This beautiful Half Eagle will be a standout piece in any advanced collection of early U.S. gold.
