1795 $5 Small Eagle AU53 PCGS. B. 8-I, Miller-12, R.7. The Small Eagle Fives of 1795 are actually among the more plentiful Capped Bust Right Half Eagles in today's market. They are the only U.S. Half Eagles actually struck in 1795 (the 1795 Heraldic Eagle coins were produced no earlier than 1797), and they are also the first gold coins struck in this country under federal authority. Most likely set aside as a novelty after a short stint in circulation, the present example is pleasingly original with rich green-gold undertones and copper tinged highlights. Remnants of a semi-prooflike finish are seen at direct angles, particularly in the more protected areas around the devices. Both sides are well struck from an expertly centered impression, and the wear is only really evident over some of the highpoints in the centers. The scattered distractions include a few moderate abrasions in the right obverse field before Liberty's portrait. From The Collection of Dennis Ridings.
