1795 $5 Small Eagle AU50 PCGS. B. 6-F, Miller-9, R.5. The Capped Bust Right, Small Eagle Five is the first U.S. gold coin, and it fulfilled Mint Director Henry William DeSaussure's desire to place gold into circulation. The official mintage of this issue is reported to be 8,707 pieces with Breen (1988) speculating that 5,958 examples of this total are of the Breen 5-E, 6-E, and 6-F die marriages. The present representative is easily attributable by reverse repunching on the D in UNITED. Both sides retain evidence of a modest prooflike finish--the finish often encountered on survivors of this issue--and the overall definition is bold despite a little light rub and some adjustment marks (as produced) in the center of the reverse. Richly colored in olive-gold and orange-gold shades with no sizeable or singularly distracting handling marks. There are, however, a few small planchet flaws (as struck) on the obverse over and before Liberty's mouth and chin. The 1795 Small Eagle is perhaps the most popular issue in the early U.S. Half Eagle series, and it is certainly the most historically significant. From the William C. Owsley, Jr. Collection.
