1795<$5> Large Eagle AU58 PCGS. Breen-6423, B. 7-X, Miller-15, R.7. The reverse of the Half Eagle was not restyled until 1797, but the Mint's initial practice of keeping earlier dated dies made possible the production of 500 Five Dollar pieces dated 1795 with the Heraldic Eagle reverse, of which approximately 10 percent survive today. This example was struck from the same obverse die as B. 7-H of the Small Eagle type. The reverse is unique to this die marriage and can be recognized by a horizontal crack near the lower border. The surfaces of this rare early Half Eagle display little actual wear and possess a pronounced green-gold finish with some subtle reflectiveness in the fields. Just a little flat at the center of the reverse, there are no mentionable pre or post-striking marks. An important example of this rare issue for the early gold specialist.
