1795<1C> Plain Edge--Double Struck and Rotated in Collar--VF30 PCGS. S-78, R.1. Struck twice within the collar, the dies rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise between blows from the dies. What should be the UNITED STATES legend is a jumble of those letters from the dual strikes, and both dates are clearly present between 5:30 and 7:30 on the obverse. The top of Liberty's head and the final letters in LIBERTY are also visible from the initial strike. Neither strike is measurably off center. It appears that the sole cause of the double strike, then, is that the piece simply was not ejected or removed from the dies after the initial strike. A medium brown piece with smooth, corrosion-free surfaces and ample definition on Liberty's hair. Plated on page 256 in Breen's Cent Encyclopedia.
Ex: Jack Robinson, (Superior 1/89), lot 146; Chris McCawley; Michael Arconti Collection of Large Cent Errors (7/03), lot 16.
