1795 1C Lettered Edge--Flipover, Double Strike--V
1795<1C> Lettered Edge--Flipover, Double Strike--VF25 PCGS. S-76a, R.5. A bold if faintly granular light brown example. The initial strike was about 20% off center toward 3 o'clock, Liberty's profile (visible despite the second strike) approaches the rim. This error was detected, and the piece was struck again with proper centering. The fraction from the initial strike remains bold on the top of Liberty's cap, the latter from the second strike. Although Sheldon-76 is usually located with a plain edge, there is no doubt the present piece is the far scarcer lettered edge variety, since the lettering can be discerned (albeit distorted) through the PCGS holder. This piece is the plate coin in the Flipovers category in the Oops chapter of Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia, page 843.
Ex: 1977 ANA Sale, Kagin's, lot 4467; C.
