1795<$10> 9 Leaves AU Details, Harshly Cleaned, NCS. Breen-6831, B. 4-C, Taraszka-3, R.6. From Bowers and Merena's sale of January 2002, where it was described as "sharpness of AU-58, lightly brushed. Bright yellow gold surfaces with numerous hairlines from improper cleaning or brushing." It is believed that approximately 15 to 18 examples of this rare variety are known. Although it has been known since Edgar Adams described the reverse in 1934, only three or four examples were identified in the next 30 years. Since the mid-1960s, collectors and dealers alike have begun to pay more attention to such things, and the true rarity of this variety became known. Prior to its appearance in the 2002 Bowers sale, this example was apparently unknown to collectors.
This is quite a sharply struck example, and it has evidence of mirrored finish in the protected areas on both sides. Several planchet flakes on the obverse and the reverse are typical of all known Nine Leaves Eagles. Such defects were caused by problems with the planchet stock, and did not occur after production. This is an important opportunity for the advanced early gold specialist, as well as the numismatist who seeks American coinage rarities.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (1/2002), lot 725.
