1795 $10 13 Leaves VF35 PCGS. B. 1-A, Taraszka-1, R.3. It is the Half Eagle and not the Eagle that was the first gold coin produced by the United States Mint. From the start, the size of the latter denomination made it too cumbersome for use in daily commerce and, at the same time, not hefty enough to earn a place of favor among bankers and those involved in international trade. Indeed, production of this denomination would cease in 1804, not to be revived until 1838. While not popular at the time of issue (except as a novelty), the first U.S. Eagles do enjoy unflagging demand from today's collectors. The present example would make an attractive addition to a circulated type set. Originally preserved, green-gold surfaces reveal rich copper tinting around many of the devices. There are scattered abrasions on both sides, but a reverse scrape on the eagle's neck and a rim bruise on the same side outside the E in AMERICA are the only singularly mentionable distractions. Moderately, yet evenly worn, the features do not reveal any areas of excessive loss of detail. Aesthetically pleasing for the grade.
