1795<$10> 13 Leaves--Scratched, Polished--ANACS. AU Details, Net XF40. Breen-6830, B. 1-A, Taraszka-1, R.3. Unnaturally bright and prooflike, but very sharp, since several breast feathers are present. A pinscratch at 1:30 on the reverse is not a significant distraction. Light adjustment marks, as produced, only affect the denticles on the reverse border between 6 and 8 o'clock. The Breen-1 and 2 obverse dies are similar and are often confused, but can be distinguished promptly by the die chip near the upper left of the Y in LIBERTY. 1795 is the initial year of gold coin production by the U.S. Mint; Half Eagles were also struck that year. An extremely desirable early gold type, the Small Eagle reverse was struck with just three dates and in limited quantities.
