1795<$10> 13 Leaves AU58 NGC. Breen-6830, B. 1-A, Taraszka-1, R.3. The 1795 is important as the first date of the eagle denomination, and it is also popular among early gold type collectors, who usually select the 1795 to represent the short-lived Small Eagle type. Although the reverse eagle has often been dismissed as an underfed chicken by various amateur numismatic art critics, the design is undeniably less crowded than the Heraldic Eagle motif. The Small Eagle type is also much less warlike, since it has a large branch and no arrows, while the Heraldic Eagle has a small olive branch, and faces a bundle of arrows.
This light honey-gold example has a few light handling marks across the open fields, none of which are conspicuous. The strike is bold throughout the wings, hair, and legends, and only the reverse denticles between 5 and 6 o'clock are indifferently brought up. Thin laminations, largely retained, are noted from stars 4 and 11 to the bust. Adjustment marks are limited to the right side denticles on the reverse, and will be missed by most observers. Light wear is apparent on the drapery and other highpoints, but when the piece is rotated beneath a light, luster sparkles throughout the stars, legends, eagle, cap, and hair. The mintage of 5,583 pieces is distributed among five die varieties, and many survivors have been cleaned, converted to jewelry, or otherwise impaired. Since examples with full mint luster are extremely rare and costly, a high-end AU piece provides a desirable yet collectible alternative.
